The Four Seasons

Winter Mandala
Winter Mandala / Painting with Light / 2013 / Terry Long

The four seasons has been both a subject and a theme for many artists, and maybe Antonio Vivaldi would most likely be the first person you would think of as someone who used this theme. I decided I would try my hand and produce four paintings using  light as the medium, and listen to Vivaldi’s violin concerto for inspiration while I painted. Seeing as it’s currently Winter, I started with that section first, plus it is also my favourite part of the music. I also based my design on a snow crystal, or snowflake. I studied many of the photographs taken by Snowflake Bentley who I  mentioned early in my blog here…

This is a close up of a section of the Mandala which was painted in sections with LED lights covered in different coloured filters and recorded on a Nikon D700 with a 50mm 1.8 lens. The exposures varied between 1.5 to 4 seconds at f22.  I used about 32 digital sections and layers in photoshop to build the mandala. I will be working on the Spring Mandala next, but in the meantime you can listen to all four seasons here while you meditate on my mandala…

    • You would be surprised Lionel. I can see the snow on the mountains from my front window right now, and a 30 to 45 minutes drive North will get you up to the snow for some skiing, a 45 minute drive South will get you to the beach for some surfing, and a 45 minute drive to the East, and your in the dry desert, and a 90 minutes West and your in Los Angeles! California is very diverse, and you should pay a visit sometime to see.
