Notan (濃淡) is a Japanese word which means the interaction and play of light and dark in design. A really good example of this would be the Yin Yang sign which symbolizes the balance between opposites and dual forces held in unity, such as night and day, or summer and winter.

Study No.3 is the repeating and tiling of Study No.2 into a checkerboard effect which is a simple way of achieving the balance between positive and negative. A good book on the principles of Notan was written by Dorr Bothwell and Marlys Frey in 1968 and has been republished by Dover. You can find it here… http://store.doverpublications.com/048626856x.html
