Weaving with Light

Inside-out / LED drawing / 2014 / Terry Long

I create some of my art by weaving with light, much the same way as weaving a basket with reed or rush, so the drawing with light is created three dimensionally in space and recorded on a long time exposure. Inside-out was produced with sixteen LED lights, eight digital sections and just two layers. My tripod mounted Nikon D700 digital SLR with a Tokina SD 17-35 f4 FX lens was used to record with.  Although the drawing took just 10 seconds using all sixteen LEDs at the same time, there were about 30 out-takes to achieve what I had initially visualized, plus all of the post production work with the chosen photo. This for me is the most time consuming part of the process, and will sometimes include using a combination of several filters and affects. I have worked with light for many years and have developed a great interest in it.  Most people know that light travels in straight lines, but can be made to change direction. A discover was made in recent years that light can change by itself!?!? Check out this link for the interesting story… http://news.sciencemag.org/2012/04/light-bends-itself
